Birding

SCALED QUAIL

Almost half (290) of the slightly over 600 species of birds recorded in Texas have been seen in Zapata County. Some of the specialties include White-Collared Seedeater, Red-Billed Pigeon, Audubon's Oriole, Cassin's Sparrow and Varied Bunting. These are in addition to the more "common" species such as Green Jay, Scaled Quail, Long-Billed Thrasher, Chihuahuan Raven, and Black-tailed Gnatcatcher. With our proximity to the Gulf of Mexico, and the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico, who knows what bird may show up!

The County offers many great sites for birders. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information.

Eco-Tourists

Zapata and Zapata County and the ranch land provide habitat for a wide diversity of wildlife. Many South Texas ranches now open their gates to nature and history buffs. The treasures of South Texas vibrant natural world also open along the 300 mile route known as the South Texas Heritage Trail. Trail miles roll with stories. Old-time ranching heritage forms the bedrock of nearly every community along the route. These welcome individuals and groups interested in heritage farms and ranches, wildlife observation and history. For details contact the Chamber of Commerce.
