Falcon Dam

FALCON DAM

Falcon Dam (Completed in 1954) is located 30 miles south of Zapata and is 150 miles above the mouth of the Rio Grande River.

2004 Marked the 50th anniversary of the Falcon Dam. The Dam was a joint venture of the Mexican and the US Governments pursuant to the Water Treaty of 1944.

Heaviest time of release has historically been during the spring months, when heavy irrigation is occurring downriver. During this time all three US units operate 24 hours. A maximum capacity of 16,000 cubic feet per second can be released through the spillway, and in the spring this capacity is often reached.

Cost: $35,000,000.00 US Share
