Zapata wins fDi North American Micro City of the Future Award 2007/2008
London-based Foreign Direct Investment (fDi) magazine, a Financial Times publication, announced its selection of Zapata, Texas as its top choice for the 2007/2008 Micro City of the Future award.
The award honors Zapata for its many attributes as a business-friendly investment location.
Zapata was chosen from a group of 108 cities across the North American Continent by a panel of six judges including Don Holbrook, a board member of the International Economic Development Research Council and
Todd Malan, the president and chief executive officer of the Washington, DC based Organization for International Investment.
The judges selected Zapata from a shortlist which took more than six months to research and evaluated criteria such as the city's economic potential, human resources, quality of life, infrastructure, business
friendliness, cost effectiveness, and investment promotion strategy.
A micro city is a metropolitan area with a population of less than 100,000. Zapata secured the Micro City of the Future position by impressing the judges with its clear development strategy and success in attracting
investors from outside the state of Texas. Zapata's many development projects include a new border crossing into Mexico, major highway improvements and a strategy for growth and investment that includes logistics,
air transport, alternative energy, eco-tourism, and security.
In addition to receiving the top accolade for the micro city category, Zapata also took top honors in the 'Most Business Friendly' location. It received a second place nod for 'Best Development and Investment Promotion',
third place for 'Best Infrastructure', fifth place for 'Best Economic Potential', and fifth place for 'Most Cost Effective' investment location.
"Zapata is a growing city and our economic growth reflects the buzz in our market," said Peggy Umphres, President of the Zapata County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Center, "Our economy has grown an average
of 5.3% year-on-year since 2003."
"Recognition from a global publication such as fDi magazine is very important to helping Zapata get the word out we're open for business and Zapata is an excellent location for foreign and domestic businesses," added Umphres.
Positioned at the US - Mexican border, on the Rio Grande, Zapata is home to over 1,000 businesses, including global companies such as ConocoPhillips and Shell. The city and surrounding county is poised to continue its economic
upward mobility, with its economy growing at a pace well above the Texas average.
"We have a dedicated team of professionals working very hard to develop Zapata's economy," said Rosalva Guerra, Zapata County Judge, "It is wonderful to see the hard work of so many recognized in this way."
Zapata was honored at an awards ceremony held in Boston on May 7. For full details from the June/July issue of fDi magazine click here.
